BBC One National News
In early September 1981, BBC News presentation underwent major change. New title sequences were introduced on all programmes. A new theme tune was also brought in; up until this point, the BBC TV news signature tune had remained unchanged since the 1960s.
Above: weekend/generic opening titles [1981]. The white lines featured in the title sequences of all BBC One news programmes started off quite thick. During 1982, the titles were altered, with the white horizontal lines appearing a little thinner. The red background colour was also adjusted.

'Breakfast Time' - the UK's first national breakfast television service - launched on January 17 1983, presented by Frank Bough and Selina Scott. Nick Ross was one of the programme's other regular presenters.
Above: 'Breakfast Time' opening titles. The visuals featured in the titles were changed quite frequently. The example shown here is from 1983. Special versions for Christmas and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games were also produced.

The 'Early Evening News' programme was replaced by a half-hour 6pm news programme which launched on September 03 1984. The new programme had two presenters each weekday. Presenters included: Sue Lawley; Nicholas Witchell; Peter Sissons; Moira Stuart; Jill Dando; Andrew Harvey; John Humphrys; Jenny Bond; Philip Hayton.

The look of the lunctime programme was updated in 1985. Not a major overhaul by any means. However, bigger changes were to come in 1986.
