On Monday October 03 1988, RTÉ's television news service was relaunched. However, the changes extended beyond the studio set and graphics on this occasion; the weekday early evening news programme was renamed and extended, becoming a one hour round-up of national, international and provincial news.

"It's one of the most important developments in news broadcasting since the foundation of the station." Rory O'Connor, RTÉ's head of television news, talking to the RTÉ Guide about the introduction of 'Six-One'.

The programme had a new anchorman - Seán Duignan - who left his job as political correspondent to carry the flagship news programme in partnership with Eileen Dunne. Vere Wynne-Jones and Colm Murray looked after the sporting side of life. Bryan Dobson, Liam Cahill and Michael Ronayne covered business news. The programme also included stories from the provincial correspondents.

Unfortunately, we have very little footage from the 1988 - 1990 period in our archive.
