In the early autumn of 1990, RTÉ's television news service was relaunched. A few weeks after the relaunch, RTÉ head of news, Joe Mulholland, spoke to the RTÉ Guide:
"The first thing to be said about news is that it is ongoing. It is there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is pretty relentless and you can never let your defences down.
"Surveys have shown that people now depend on TV and radio, for the most part, for their information. So there is a great onus upon us to provide comprehensive news including national, regional and international news, and we meet these obligations day after day.
"Over the last number of weeks we have changed our graphics and our style of presenting and I think that certainly the look of our TV news compares favourably to anything seen in Europe.
"We have a very professional journalistic staff who believe strongly in accuracy and fairness and I believe our determination to maintain a professional news service is crucial to our future.
"We are of course facing growing competition, not only from within this country but from external sources including organisations that have ten times the resources we have. But I think we are competing very well and despite our difficulties there is an air of confidence around the newsroom."
The presenter line-up at relaunch was as follows:
•
One O'Clock News: Bryan Dobson
•
Six-One: Sean Duignan and Anne Doyle
•
Nine O'Clock News: Eamonn Lawlor
However, by 1992, a further reshuffle had taken place:
•
Six-One: Eamonn Lawlor and Anne Doyle
•
Nine O'Clock News: Bryan Dobson
