March 1999 - June 2003 [Part 2]
Early-evening
ITV National News
In March 1999, ITV launched the new look 'Early Evening News'. The programme was promoted as ITV's flagship news offering; effectively, this was the replacement for 'News At Ten', with the same editorial approach. Until January 2001, the 'ITV Early Evening News' was fronted by Sir Trevor McDonald mainly, although Kirsty Young and Nicholas Owen also presented the programme on occasion.

'News At Ten' features such as the Big Ben 'bongs' and the 'And Finally...' slot lived on in the new early-evening programme.

The return of 'News At Ten' on January 22 2001 brought with it a change in the presenting teams on ITV's other main news programmes. Sir Trevor McDonald returned to the 10pm programme; Dermot Murnaghan and Kirsty Young took over as the two new co-anchors on the 'ITV Early Evening News'.

In early-2002, Kirsty moved back to 'Channel 5 News', with Mary Nightingale taking on the presenting role on the 'ITV Early Evening News'. Katie Derham became an occasional early-evening presenter.

The 'ITV Early Evening News' went out 6.30pm - 7pm weekdays.
