Five News
Coverage of 'Five News' presentation.

Kirsty Young revealed the new look 'Five News' - now produced by Sky News - in the first of the new bulletins on January 03 2005 at 5.30pm.

The unique set, complete with a mezzanine floor, has been designed by PDG, part of the Jack Morton Group based in New York, who have previously worked on the groundbreaking CNBC studio and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Five's senior programme controller, Chris Shaw, said: "The design is a deliberate move away from the current obsession with virtual reality sets. We’ve tried to create a proper physical home for our news which is both modern and personal."

Kirsty Young said: "'Five News' has prided itself on being at the forefront of television news innovation in terms of both presentation and editorial perspective. The resources at Sky News are fantastic, we have increased capabilities in outside broadcasts and graphics and viewers will really see a difference on screen."

For the first time in terrestrial news broadcasting, the studio is using "clever glass" which allows the glass to change at the flick of a switch from a transparent layer to a frosted glass that images can be projected on to.

'Five News' editor, Mark Calvert, said: "Our studio reflects the warmth and friendliness of our presenters, while making the most of some innovative new technology. We're especially pleased with the "clever glass" windows behind Kirsty and the team – which allows us to instantly transform the set to suit any story."

Head of Sky News, Nick Pollard, said: "This is new territory for Sky News and we are absolutely committed to providing a first class service to Five and its viewers. We've assembled a cracking team and the combination of a new look, an injection of fresh ideas and the energy and sparkle of Sky News will reinvigorate 'Five News'."
