February 1996 saw the much-hyped relaunch of the BBC Northern Ireland regional news magazine. The programme now had a new name - 'Newsline'. The early-evening weekday programme moved from 5.35pm to 6.30pm.

Prior to October 1997, the background colour scheme on 'Newsline 6.30' would change around halfway through the programme. Following the colour change, no inset graphics were used for the remainder of the programme.

A week before the relaunch of 'Newsline', the programme moved to a temporary studio in late-September 1999.
