BBC South East News
Until 1984, viewers in the BBC South East region didn't have the kind of local news service provided in other BBC regions. The south east had no short bulletins, just a regional news round-up in the early-evening. There were no dedicated regional presenters either. 'South East At 6' was usually presented by whoever happened to be involved in the 'Nationwide' programme that evening.
'South East At 6' launched on January 04 1982.

From October 1983, the south east regional news programme looked rather different, following the launch of the new national 'Sixty Minutes' programme. The local early-evening news programme was now known simply as 'South East'.
Unfortunately, we have no footage of the programme during this period. If you have any recordings of the south east regional news programme during the 'Sixty Minutes' era, we'd be delighted to hear from you. Please refer to the

With the demise of 'Sixty Minutes', in came 'London Plus'. This was the first time since 'Town And Around' in the 1960s that the BBC South East region had its own local TV news magazine, with dedicated presenters and set. 'London Plus' launched on September 03 1984. A year later, south east lunchtime and afternoon bulletins were also introduced.
The presenter line-up included Sally Magnusson, Bob Wellings and Guy Michelmore.

The programme's theme tune was amended in February 1985 and again in July 1985.

A completely new theme tune and new titles were introduced on Monday February 17 1986. Most of the other graphics stayed the same, however, as did the set (apart from the new 'London Plus' logo).
In early-1987, the grey set was introduced, along with new graphics. The opening titles were amended at this point, with coloured bars being added at the end, under the 'London Plus' logo; in the original version, the background remained blue. There were no further changes to graphics until the programme's demise in March 1989.
